Taught by artist Joseph Grice, this three-day workshop expands on the process of oil painting with lessons in underpainting, color mixing, shadows and blending. All painting surfaces and mediums are provided—just bring your own paints and brushes (see our suggested supply list). This class is for people who have given oil paint a try and are ready to learn specific techniques.
Joseph Grice is a wildlife painter based in Jamestown NY. Among other places, his work has been featured by the Roger Tory Peterson Museum and the Society of Animal Artists.
Suggested paints and brushes:
Exact colors are not necessary. You will just need a few student-grade colors for this class, (Winsor-Newton is a great option). It helps to have one bright red, blue and yellow, black, white and a medium brown. Some suggestions are:
Reds: Cadmium Red, Cadmium Red Hue or bright red
Yellows: Lemon, Cadmium Yellow or Cadmium Yellow Hue
Blue: Cobalt or Ultramarine
Brown: Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna
White: Any kind of white, (Titanium, Flake White, Soft Mixing White)
Black: Lamp or Mars Black
Specific brushes are not necessary. Synthetic brushes for oil/acrylic will work best, (Princeton is a great option). Short handled brushes are fine for this class. Some suggestions are:
Two Flat Brushes, sizes 10 - 12 and 4-6
Round Brush, size 4-6
Filbert, size 4-8
